For students who get stuck trying to come up with an idea, story prompts can help unleash their creativity. All they need is a start.
learn classic literature
Students can compare their stories with the Grimms' originals (not included but easily found online) and see what stayed the same and what changed from the original. Students will be surprised!

Students are challenged to start in various places in the stories. Given a "middle" quote they have to write what came before and after. Given an ending quote, they have to figure out what led up to that point.

Workbooks: find your fairy tale voice
Students start making lists of what they like about fairy tales, from characters to settings to plots. Sample lists are given to start them off.
try plotting tools used by professional authors
Using guided questions, plot charts, and space for maps, students can brainstorm a new fairy tale based on their favorite tropes they uncover in the first section. The workbooks are leveled so that new material is added with each jump up in grade level.
write your own tale
Once students get some ideas down, they can start writing their story. At any time they can return to the workbook to brainstorm and make changes as new ideas come to light.
